Memories of matter

2021

The gathering of materials is a selective process. It is linked to an aesthetic approach in terms of colour, texture, and emotional connection to the surroundings. When materials are collected, they become artefacts of the past - revealing layers of memories and meanings that emerge when they are removed from their context.

The connection between a decayed object and natural matter is tied to memory, whereas the former is linked to anthropological intervention. While the earth itself is a memory holder, recalling its past through stratigraphic layering, the same can be said of things constructed by hand. They bear marks of human touch, a memento of their transition from natural to functional matter. On the one hand, the lack of functionality, which was originally assigned to it, creates an aura of abandonment. However, I perceive such an object as a raw material with creative potential.
